Minus 1 here in Johannesburg tonight – and it feels like minus 5 inside, in this icy, wind-blasted, Arctic house. I would be warmer inside an igloo, I have no doubt.

I am wearing a dressing gown over my fleece, and wearing a fleece over my jersey, and right now I’d trade all this for a winter’s evening in Toronto, where there is double-glazing and central heating – and, did I mention this, a woman, too.

Many ways to keep warm – and all I can think of is a hot bath, a hot water bottle, and a quick dive beneath the winter sheets.
